In an attempt to contain the spread of infection, China has restricted travel for 35 million people with authorities starting emergency quarantine measures in at least 12 cities.

Health officials have refused to comment on reports of several potential cases under observation.

As of Friday, the Chinese government says the virus has reached six countries other than their own - Thailand, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Vietnam and Singapore - though the majority of cases still reside within China and its provinces.

The case marks the second confirmed in the US, after officials in Seattle said a patient was now in isolation after being diagnosed with coronavirus.

The coronavirus has infected more than 600 people worldwide, though mostly in China.

In a shock move, parts of the Great Wall of China and Disneyland in Shanghai were shut tin a bid to stem the spread of the virus.

Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds, and upper respiratory infection in chickens. Close contacts are deemed to be anyone who was within 6ft (2m) of the patient. The first confirmed patient in the USA with the virus was a man in his 30s who also traveled to Wuhan and returned on January 15 to his home in Washington state.

"These wildlife markets are a risk", said Dr. Ian Lipkin of Columbia University, who assisted the World Health Organization and China during the SARS outbreak and advises Saudi Arabia about MERS.

The city of more than 11 million people has been centralising its treatment of the new virus by isolating patients in 61 clinics and designated hospitals. "So the issue is not so much really numbers that we know will go up".

While human-to-human transmission has been reported within China, Ghebreyesus said, it so far seems to be mostly limited to close family members and health-care workers.

Taiwan has banned people arriving from Wuhan and the U.S. state department warned American travellers to exercise increased caution in China.
