Ken Starr, Alan Dershowitz To Join Donald Trump’s Legal Team For Impeachment Trial

"The articles of impeachment submitted by House Democrats are a unsafe attack on the right of the American people to freely choose their president", Trump's team said. "So let's have that fair trial", said Democratic Rep. Jason Crow of Colorado, one of the seven impeachment prosecutors who will make the case for Trump's removal. "The outcome of these proceedings will determine whether generations to come will enjoy a safe and secure democracy in which the president is not a king". Opening arguments will begin on Tuesday.

Cornyn, who is a former judge, also correctly noted that the article of impeachment against the president alleging "abuse of power" is not a crime within itself.

McConnell oversees a 53-47 Republican majority in the body, giving him all the power he needs to set the rules his way and deny the witnesses. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi selected him in September after she made a decision to move forward with the investigation.

The Senate, controlled by Mr Trump's Republican Party, will decide whether to convict and remove him from office.

It is expected to file a more-detailed legal brief on January 20, and House managers will have the opportunity to respond the following day before the formal trial begins.

The brief calls on senators to conduct a fair trial as part of the oath they took last week to "do impartial justice".

The Trump team, meanwhile, called the Senate's formal impeachment summons to the two articles of impeachment "a risky attack on the right of the American people to freely choose their president".

In response to the allegations against Trump, the White House legal team said the two articles are a brutal and unlawful attempt to defeat the will of the county people.

"The indictments submitted by the House of Representatives constitute a risky attack on the right of the American people to freely choose their president", he added.

Also reportedly joining the legal team will be Robert Ray, Starr's former deputy.

Starr, the independent counsel whose investigation of President Bill Clinton led to his impeachment, was scheduled to provide analysis for Fox News Channel's coverage, but a network spokesperson said that he is no longer a contributor in light of his new role.

What did the Democrats say?

According to a report from The New York Times, Senate Democrats only need to convince four Republican senators to allow them to subpoena witnesses in the impeachment trial.

What precisely is Trump implicated of doing?

The politically polarising impeachment case involves Mr Trump's attempt to persuade Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to investigate Democratic rival Joe Biden a year ago. One, that he abused his presidential power by pressuring Ukraine to investigate Democratic rival Joe Biden, using military aid to the country as leverage.

Democrats state this totals up to a misuse of governmental power.

In a six-page document to be released on Saturday, Trump's lawyers for the first time formally addressed the merits of the two articles of impeachment - abuse of power and obstruction of Congress - that the Democratic-led House approved late previous year.

His Senate impeachment trial opens Tuesday.

Debate continued Sunday about the rules that will apply to the trial, including whether to call witnesses and whether Republicans will move to dismiss the case altogether.

In the not likely occasion of Mr Trump being condemned, he would certainly be eliminated from workplace and Vice-President Mike Pence would certainly be promised in as head of state.
