The third victim, a man who had suffered severe burns, died in a Barcelona hospital nearly 24 hours after the blast, Spanish private news agency Europa Press reported.

Residents added they saw "a ball of fire" across the sky after the accident at the Quimicas del Oxido de Etileno (IQOXE) chemical plant in Tarragona. With one person reported dead, the plant is being searched for survivors.

The service advised residents in parts of the city of 800,000 and in nearby towns to close their windows and to refrain from going outside as preventive measures. The seven people injured all worked there, officials said.

The cause of the blast last night at the IQOXE facility - which specialises in the production of ethylene oxide, glycol and propylene oxide - is not immediately known. A piece flying metal from the factory 3km away struck a man's apartment, killing him.

The blast in the port city of Tarragona sent a column of black smoke into the sky and prompted local authorities to warn people in surrounding areas to stay inside as a precaution.
