Wildfires burning across Australia's two most populous states on Tuesday trapped residents of a seaside town in apocalyptic conditions, destroyed many properties and caused at least two fatalities.

People in the town woke up to thick smoke and pale, orange skies. Record-breaking heat and windy conditions triggered wildfires in New South Wales and Queensland states in September.

The two confirmed deaths raise the toll to at least 12 in Australia's wildfires, which also have razed more than 1,000 homes in the past few months.

The popular celebrations are expected to attract around a million spectators and generate 130 million Australian dollars ($91 million) for the state's economy.

Some of those trapped in the town posted images of blood-red, smoke-filled skies on social media.

Some areas have lost both electricity and phone service, according to local media.
