As of this morning, Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg has officially announced that he is joining the 2020 presidential race.

The move adds another moderate voice to a crowded field of White House contenders. "We can not afford four more years of President Trump's reckless and unethical actions", Mr. Bloomberg said in a statement on his campaign website.

Mr. Bloomberg considered running in 2016 but decided against it, endorsing Democrat Hillary Clinton instead.

Bloomberg News will continue normal campaign coverage, though they will "continue our tradition of not investigating Mike (and his family and foundation) and we will extend the same policy to his rivals in the Democratic primaries".

Bloomberg had been actively preparing to launch a presidential bid for some time, and in recent weeks had filed to appear on ballots in several states, raising speculation that he would indeed join the race. Bloomberg, who only officially became a Democrat past year, is considered a centrist and was convinced to run by former Vice President Joe Biden's perceived inability to lock down the moderate vote.

However, Bloomberg has his work cut out for him.

Bloomberg touted some of his achievements as NY mayor, including getting the city back on its feet after the September 11, 2001 attacks - he was first elected in January of the following year, taking over from Rudy Giuliani - and banning smoking in restaurants and bars. Facing an African-American congregation this month in Brooklyn, Bloomberg apologised and acknowledged it often led to the detention of blacks and Latinos.

In addition, Bloomberg already made plans to spend $100 million on a digital advertising campaign against Trump in the battleground states of Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
