Fast-moving LA-area wildfire prompts mandatory evacuations

One death has been reported, and dozens of homes are said to be entirely demolished, according to KCAL9, a CBS affiliate in L.A. The resident died from cardiac arrest, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department's website.

At least one person is dead in a fast-moving wildfire razing 4,700 acres north of Los Angeles, California, forcing thousands of others to flee.

Hector Landeros, who lives in northern Los Angeles' Sylmar neighborhood, said he heard fire trucks and police cruisers speeding through the streets Thursday night as the massive flames got closer.

Thousands of acres of Southern California are now burning as crews work to contain the Saddleridge Fire, Sandalwood Fire, Wendy Fire, Caples Fire, and other simultaneous blazes across the region.

The blaze, which officials have named the Saddleridge Fire, ignited late Thursday in the city of Sylmar.

Besides burning in northern Los Angeles, the fire also is moving north toward the city of Santa Clarita, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Deputy Dave Richardson said.

Some of the wildfires started because of trees falling on power lines - trees that should have been cleared by PG&E due to their proximity to the lines. It has burned at least 500 acres and was at least 10% contained.
