Indonesian Security Minister Wiranto wounded in public stabbing

A knife-wielding man suspected of belonging to a radical Islamic group wounded Indonesia's security minister, a local police chief and another person in an attack in western Indonesia on Thursday, officials said.

A man and a woman carried out the attack at 11:55 a.m. Jakarta time, when the minister was about to shake hands with residents in Alun-Alun park of Pandeglang district of the province, the spokesman said. Many policemen were stationed at the hospital.

Wiranto, 72 - who police have said was one of several targets in an earlier failed assassination plot - was rushed by helicopter to the capital where he was treated for two knife wounds in his stomach. Authorities say there are no other suspects involved in this attack.

The motive for the attack, which came just a few days before Mr Widodo's inauguration for his second five-year term in office, was not immediately clear.
