Bezos also said Amazon was ordering 100,000 electric delivery vehicles from USA vehicle design and manufacturing startup Rivian Automotive LLC and would use 100% renewable energy by 2030, up from 40% today.

"We're done being in the middle of the herd on this issue-we've made a decision to use our size and scale to make a difference", Bezos said in a press release.

To help achieve its goal, Amazon has ordered 100,000 electric delivery vans from automaker Rivian.

Amazon just announced that it plans to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement 10 years early. When all 100,000 Rivian electric vans are on the road, Amazon says it will net savings of 4 million metric tons of carbon per year.

The first vans will hit the road in 2021, with the fleet to be fully operational in 2030.

Bezos announced a number of actions at a press conference in Washington ahead of Climate Week in NY next week, a global gathering of world and company leaders seeking ways to fight climate change.

"The global strike tomorrow is totally understandable", Bezos said.

The online shopping giant has been facing pressure from its own employees to do more to combat climate change and rely less on fossil fuels. "By the way, they should be passionate about this issue".

Bezos was joined by Christiana Figueres, the former United Nations climate chief and founder of the climate activist group Global Optimism.

He vowed to try to convince other company CEOs to sign "The Climate Pledge".

This will involve investments in wind and solar energy projects and initiatives to curb carbon emissions at its facilities including the second headquarters, HQ2, just outside the U.S. capital.

Bezos's pledge came a day before more than 1,500 Amazon employees are scheduled to walk out of their offices to draw attention to the company's inaction on climate change.

This means keeping warehouses and products closer to the consumer and as a result "you're actually transporting the products in a very efficient way, a very short distance", which becomes less carbon-intensive, he said.
